Fantasyland Re-Imagained

Big news at Walt Disney World, Thursday, December 7, they will be unveiling the brand new Fantasyland expansion.  This expansion is the largest expansion in the Magic Kingdom's four-decade history, nearly doubling the size of Fantasyland.

Fantasyland is one of the seven themed lands of the Magic Kingdom.  This land is inspired by Disney animated classics such as Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Dumbo.

The "Enchanted Forest" expansion features a Little Mermaid ride "Under the Sea-Journey of the Little Mermaid", a Beauty and Beast-themed "Be Our Guest Restaurant" and Ariel's Grotto.

When you come to AAPC's conference you will definitely want to check out the newly updated Fantasyland!  For more details check out there website.

Be Our Guest

Dear AAPC Members:

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend our 2013 National Conference in beautiful Orlando, Florida, at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort and Convention Center. The setting alone will lay the foundation for a magical experience for all.  Years ago, Walt Disney said: “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”  We couldn’t agree more, and this conference will do just that! With the launch of our ICD-10 General Code Set Training (which some called impossible) and the broad offering of pertinent, timely health care subjects combined with loads of fun – this is one conference you won’t want to miss!  From the minute you book your ticket, you’ll be part of the magic – the Disney Magic Express (DME) from the Orlando airport, the magic of seeing old friends and making new, the magic you feel as you grasp new concepts and increase your level of  knowledge, and of course, the actual magic of enjoying Disney World with your complimentary ticket!  So please join me for an unforgettably magical experience as we journey together toward ICD-10 implementation, hone other coding, compliance, and audit skills, or even jump into one of our practice management sessions.

Let me end with one more quote from Walt, who said, “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”  We’ve heard the talk for years….it’s time to begin the walk.  See you there!

Little Tidbits on Chicago

Here are some little-known facts to help you realize that Chicago truly is one of America’s best cities.

The 4 stars on the Chicago flag represent Fort Dearborn, the Chicago Fire, the World’s Columbian Exposition, and the Century of Progress Exposition.

The Art Institute of Chicago holds the largest collection of Impressionist paintings outside the Louvre in Paris – who knew?

Among the Field Museum’s most prized jewels is the 5,890-carat Chalmerz topaz, which weighed 10,200 carats in the rough – wow!

"Dragged Through the Garden" Dog....PLEASE!

Now if you want to experience everything Chicago, well you will have to try a CHICAGO DOG!  Now a Chicago-style hot dog or Chicago dog is an all-beef frankfurter on a poppy seed bun. It has many toppings which they, Chicagoan's, call "dragged through the garden".  It starts with yellow mustard on the dog, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, and a dash of celery salt.  Now you understand why they say "dragged through the garden", they aren't kidding.

You will notice there is no ketchup in the ingredients.  Well, there is a strong widely-shared opinion among aficionados that ketchup is UNACCEPTABLE.  Apparently some Chicago hot dog vendors do not even offer ketchup as a condiment.  Who knew!

Now where can you find a fabulous Chicago hot dog..check out these places:
Chubby Wieners 4652 N. Western Ave, Lincoln Square, Chicago
Superdawg Drive-In  6363 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago
Portillo's 100 W. Ontario, Chicago
Hot Doug's 3324 North California, Chicago

Learn something new...

The Magnificent Mile, sometimes referred to as The Mag Mile, is a neighborhood in Chicago, that runs along a portion of Michigan Avenue extending from the Chicago River to Oak Street. It serves as the main thoroughfare between Chicago's Loop business district and its Gold Coast.[2]

Real estate developer Arthur Rubloff gave the nickname to one of the city's most prestigious residential and commercial thoroughfares in the 1940s.[1] Currently, Chicago's largest shopping district, various mid-range and high-end shops line this section of the street and approximately 3,100,000 square feet (290,000 m2) is currently occupied by retail stores, restaurants, museums and motels.[3] It includes fine restaurants, hotels, and stores and several of the tallest buildings in the United States. In addition, numerous prestigious buildings are located along the Magnificent Mile, such as the Wrigley Building and the John Hancock Center, places listed on the National Register of Historic Places such as The Old Chicago Water Tower District and Chicago Landmarks such as Tribune Tower and the Allerton Hotel.

DO U KNOW UNO?

"It is hopeless for the occasional visitor to try to keep up with Chicago. She outgrows his prophecies faster than he can make them." - Mark Twain, 1883

Chicago, more specifically 'Pizzeria Uno", is said to be the birthplace of Deep Dish Pizza. City lore has it that a Texan named Ike Sewell created the dish at his bar and grill named Pizzeria Uno in 1943.

During the depression of the thirties, followed by the war years of the forties, Americans ate one-dish meals of "casseroles", easily procured ingredients that would satisfy the stomach, stretch the budget and not cost many ration coupons. Therefore, the more you could load onto a pizza crust, the better it would be, and doubtless a deep pan would be more like a casserole. Moreover, the crust would not need the fancy stretching and pushing, even tossing, that the traditional Italian thin pizza would require. The mozzarella cheese would be on the bottom and the crust and toppings would all bake and ooze together and become one of America's legacies to fast foods nationwide and waistwide!

Did you know...

The Great Chicago Fire
The summer of 1871 was very dry, leaving the ground parched and the wooden city vulnerable. On Sunday evening, October 8, 1871, just after nine o'clock, a fire broke out in the barn behind the home of Patrick and Catherine O'Leary at 13 DeKoven Street. How the fire started is still unknown today, but an O'Leary cow often gets the credit.

The firefighters, exhausted from fighting a large fire the day before, were first sent to the wrong neighborhood. When they finally arrived at the O'Leary's, they found the fire raging out of control. The blaze quickly spread east and north. Wooden houses, commercial and industrial buildings, and private mansions were all consumed in the blaze.

After two days, rain began to fall. On the morning of October 10, 1871, the fire died out, leaving complete devastation in the heart of the city. At least 300 people were dead, 100,000 people were homeless, and $200 million worth of property was destroyed. The entire central business district of Chicago was leveled. The fire was one of the most spectacular events of the nineteenth century, and it is recognized as a major milestone in the city's history.

Well, why can't you!?!?!  It's as easy as preparing a display board highlighting your local chapter's accomplishments, asking for volunteers that will be attending conference to dedicate some time on Sunday, and then contacting Claire Bartkewicz, Claire.Bartkewicz@aapcca.org, to reserve your spot.  It's just that easy!!!
Still need some ideas on what to share at G2KYLC:  Has your chapter hosted a joint seminar with another local chapter, or hosted a job fair in your area?  Have you developed a newsletter that all your members are raving about?  Did your chapter create a fun and exciting coding game that you'd like to brag about and show off at conference?

Mr. Pew's Favorites in Las Vegas

Reed has seen The Beatles LOVE, KA and "O".  Here is what Reed has to say about the shows.
Reed and his wife Julie at The Beatles LOVE show
"All are Cirque de Soleil shows. "O" is a water show that is amazing;  it is the best show in Vegas.   It’s at the Bellagio.  LOVE is acrobatics set to Beatles music with people flying over your head and around the huge stage and room.  That show is at the Mirage.  Fun, fun, fun.    KA is also acrobatics but on a moving stage that tilts in almost every direction including straight up and down.  It’s unbelievable how the performers don’t fall off it.  It’s at the MGM (the big green hotel) and very good."

Reed's other tidbits that he found while in Vegas recently:
"First - there is a ton less smoking in the casino’s than I remember; Second - unless gambling is really fun for you, save your money for shows and restaurants; Third - there are many excellent restaurants along the Strip in Vegas but the cheap ones are almost all gone; Fourth - if you want a Sunday brunch at a hotel along the strip, be prepared to stand in a long line to get in or pay $10 extra for a short line, nonetheless the brunches are all very, very good;  and fifth the weather should be excellent in April and the walk along the strip is surprising short from one big hotel to another.   Take a cab from the Rio to the Strip (less than $10) and then walk to see things – great exercise and does not take long to get where you want to go.   Don’t recommend high heels though."
See you in Vegas!
